Giving Life: Origins of Feteer Meshaltet in Ancient Egypt

“Feteer Meshaltet” is one of the most iconic Egyptian dishes in the Egyptian cuisine which symbolizes the hospitality in the country that dates back to the time of the pharaohs. YumReads investigated to find out its origins through the Egyptian historians who know what was found in tombs.

Ahmed Refaat, Professor at History Department, Al-Azhar University stated that its story dates back to finding its recipe in the tomb of Eighteenth Dynasty Vizier Rekhmire where it indicated that ancient Egyptians offered the Feteer Meshaltet as an oblation to the pharaohs in order to worship gods back then believing that it will be used as food for the Gods and the afterlife. He added that it was not named as it is now, but it was called “Al-Maltout” pie.

Dr. Hala Khalaf, Head of History department, Faculty of Education, Ain Shams University mentioned that the ancient Egyptian life’s backbone was the bread as it is the main source of food in the Egyptian cuisine. She explained that they had more than 90 types of bread. Many of those types were used in medical aspects and benefited those who had diabetes and those who suffer from stomach ailments.  

Khalf mentioned that bread making in Egypt dates back to about 5800 years indicated by predynastic archaeological sites
